How to Prepare for Your Headshot Session

A little bit of prep goes a long way when it comes to headshots.

You don’t need to overthink it, but a few small choices ahead of time can make a big difference in how confident and natural you feel once the camera comes out. Here’s what I usually tell clients before their session.

Think About Where the Photo Will Live

Before anything else, think about where this headshot is actually going to be used. LinkedIn, a company website, a real estate listing, an acting profile: they all call for a slightly different feel. A corporate headshot usually leans clean and polished, while something for a more creative field can carry a little more personality and warmth. Knowing the end use helps guide wardrobe, background, and even posing.

Wardrobe Choices

Solid colors almost always photograph better than busy patterns, logos, or text. Stick to colors that complement your skin tone and avoid anything too bright or distracting that pulls focus from your face. Jewel tones, navy, and classic neutrals tend to be safe, flattering choices. Skip pure white if you can. It tends to wash out and can throw off exposure.

If you’re not sure what to wear, bring two or three outfit options and we’ll figure out what works best together once we see it on camera.

Skin and Grooming

Get a good night’s sleep before your session if you can. It genuinely shows. If you wear makeup, a slightly fuller application than your everyday look usually reads better in photos, since the camera tends to flatten things out. For guys, if you’re planning to shave, do it the night before rather than right before the shoot, since fresh shaves can sometimes leave slight redness.

If you have a haircut planned, try to schedule it a few days ahead rather than the same day. That gives your hair a chance to settle into its natural look.

Bring a Little Bit of You

Headshots work best when they still feel like you. Don’t force an expression you’d never actually make in real life. We’ll work together to find something natural, whether that’s a warm smile, a confident look, or something a little more relaxed, depending on how you want to come across.

If it helps, think about how you want people to feel when they see your photo. Trustworthy. Approachable. Sharp. That mindset alone can shape the whole session.

What to Expect the Day Of

Plan to arrive a few minutes early so we’re not rushing right into it. We’ll take some time at the start to talk through the look you’re going for, check wardrobe options, and get you settled in before we start shooting. Headshots can feel a little awkward at first for most people, and that’s completely normal. Part of my job is helping you relax into it so your photos look natural instead of stiff.
